VDA Gallery „Akademija“, Pilies g. 44/Latako g. 2, 01124 Vilnius, Lithuania
VDA Gallery „Akademija“ presents the exhibition „Surfaces of Time“, featuring two Lithuanian artists living abroad. Graphic artist Viltė Žumbakytė Haisch, based in Germany, and painter Sonata Riepšaitė, based in the Netherlands, are united by their chosen medium—charcoal.
In their works, both artists seek points of connection with their surroundings, exploring space, surfaces, and textures. A significant element in both of their creations is the horizon line—a boundary between reality and unreality. Viltė Žumbakytė Haisch’s drawings capture flow, the vitality of the moment, and reflections on natural forms—an attempt to halt the fleeting and ephemeral using charcoal. In contrast, Sonata Riepšaitė’s works depict time as if suspended in midair—within this stillness, past, present, and hints of the future intertwine, while the depicted motifs balance between reality and fiction.
Charcoal, as a symbol of impermanence, fragility, and the enduring force of nature, becomes a tool in the artists’ hands, allowing them to explore the worlds of nature, imagination, and memory. In the deep blackness of charcoal, which absorbs the vibrancy of light (color), the noise of everyday life fades, different surfaces of time overlap, and inner landscapes emerge. These are spaces of silence and longing, silently inviting the viewer into a slow, contemplative experience of the artwork.
